Things I Love About the Sabbath
When I share with someone that I keep the Sabbath (honor YHWH's set apart day by resting on the seventh day of the week), they usually feel sorry for me. It's crazy, but many people treat the day of rest like it is some sort of huge burden. If you might be feeling that way yourself, let me tell you: it is anything but a burden. You know when you're feeling overloaded and say, "I need a vacation!" or wonder when you're next day off is? For me, that is never more than six days away. Isaiah 58:13 calls the Sabbath a delight, and once you've made it your lifestyle, it is so easy to do that. While there are many difficulties and heavy loads to carry in life, having a day to rest is not one of them.
A few things I love about the Sabbath:
1. It's a break. One of my favorite things about the Sabbath is always having an upcoming break from it all. No matter how busy things are with work, family commitments, seeing friends, home improvement projects, and whatever else I'm juggling I get to look forward to taking a step back to refresh. Before I started honoring Shabbat my calendar would often become overfilled and it would be overwhelming not to have a day off in site. No worries about that now as there is time to rest each week. That is such a gift to look forward to during busy times.
2. There's time to spend in the Word. Of course I make it a point to spend time reading Scripture, listening to teaching, and praying throughout the week but sometimes that's not as much as I would like. Honoring the Sabbath means no matter what the rest of the week was like, I have a set time for spiritual refreshment. And studying on Shabbat is so nice because you don't have that rush to finish your reading on your lunch break or in the carpool line.
3. Getting to see family. Even if my husband and I are both very busy we know for sure we will get to spend time together come the Sabbath day. We have also made a tradition of lunch with my parents and grandparents, and extended family on Shabbat so we are always able to have quality time as a family and to catch up during seasons that would otherwise be too busy.
4. No money is spent. While some might view not shopping on the Sabbath as an inconvenience, our bank account appreciates having a no-spend day each week. Honoring the Sabbath means we don't go out for a meal or go shopping or make an online purchase or buy coffee. That's a financial difference that adds up. Before you say that the same amount of money gets spent on the other days of the week let me give an example of the financial savings of the Sabbath. It's not unusual for us to think of something on Friday or Shabbat that we need or would like to have, but since we aren't able to purchase it right away we often find that the desire for that item fades or an opportunity to borrow what's needed or otherwise get it for less presents itself. Patience can save you a lot!
5. The stability of this compounds. Maybe the perks of financial savings or taking a break from it all don't sound life changing, but being able to look forward to the Sabbath each week compounds in an amazing way! The first time I observed the Sabbath I didn't feel much different, but now I can see what a huge impact this has had on my life. I am less stressed, and much less easily overwhelmed. Managing my life around keeping this commandment has brought incredible peace and contentment to my life.

There Remains a Sabbath Rest
This passage in Hebrews, written several decades after the ascension of the Messiah, has a simple reminder for us: Sabbath remains. Many translations of Scripture even say, "there remains a Sabbath keeping duty for the people of YHWH." This is something he expects us to do, honor the fourth commandment. Many people teach that if you believe in the Messiah you don't need to do this, but Scripture says otherwise. And it says otherwise, in this passage specifically, around 30 years after Yahusha left this world.
This shouldn't be viewed as a burden, but rest that is needed for the hard work of living and creating and making and doing. Earlier in the passage we are reminded that YHWH himself rested on the seventh day from all his works (Hebrews 4:4). This verse is permission to rest and breathe and relax; actually it is a commandment given to us by YHWH himself.

How To Stop Working on Shabbat
So you've realized that the Sabbath is on the seventh day and that honoring it is a good idea. But...you work on Shabbat. How can you change that? It is challenging to do holy things in a culture that does otherwise. It can take time to find a way to set apart the Sabbath day. It can be hard, but not too hard. It is possible to have a work schedule that allows you to rest on the Sabbath. Here are some ideas to get there.
-Pray about it.
This is step one! If you believe that YHWH desires you to honor his Shabbat by having a day off of work, pray for guidance about the route you should take to get there. He will provide a way for you to honor his commandment.
-And then do something.
I am reminded of the story in Nehemiah 4 when those working to rebuild the wall prayed for protection and organized a watch for safety. If money is tight do you pray for YHWH to meet your needs? Of course. But do you just sit back on the couch hoping for an unexpected check to show up or do you go to work, put in overtime, delay a shopping trip, search the couch cushions for change, etc. to scrape up enough money for your bills? Faith goes with action!
-Be a great employee.
If you want your employer to accommodate your desire to rest on the Sabbath, it helps to be great at what you do. Honing your professional skill set, working hard, following directions and protocol, having a positive attitude, going the extra mile, being friendly and considerate to coworkers and clients, intentionally working towards getting better at what you do, showing up on time - these are things that companies value. If you show up at work with a poor attitude, slack off from your duties, complain and gossip why would anyone go out of their way to have you work for them? Being hard working and reliable means that your place of business will be more likely to go out of their way to keep you around.
-Talk to your boss about changing your availability.
Your supervisor is not going to change your schedule unless you talk to them about it. It might not be the most comfortable conversation, but if honoring Shabbat is important to you then it's necessary. You don't need to give a ton of details if you don't want to. You could start the conversation with something like, "I've decided to start observing the Biblical Sabbath day which is Saturday and I'd like to talk with you about options for me to have that day off." If being direct is difficult, consider putting it in writing.
-What if your supervisor questions your sincerity?
Many people have been questioned by their employer about their beliefs, and it usually goes along the lines of, I thought you were always religious, why would this be an issue now? or It sounds like you just don't want to work Saturdays. Employers are allowed to ask some questions on your faith, and how and when you present your request will have some affect on how it is received. If the company has just announced it will no longer pay time and a half on Saturdays and that's when you say you can't work then for religious reasons...well, you can see how that would look suspicious. Otherwise, just honestly tell them that your beliefs have changed. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (they enforce the non discrimination laws) has pointed out that religious beliefs and practices do change over time, so what you've done in the past should not determine your present beliefs.
Make it a point to show the sincerity of your beliefs at other times as well. Would coworkers be surprised that you're a believer based on your workplace behavior? Is your boss able to drive by your home and see you mowing the grass on your 'day of rest'? There are countless ways you can show that your faith is important to you, which is an excellent testimony to others, and should go a long way with your workplace accommodating your desire to honor Shabbat.
-Sign up for other shifts.
When I first started observing the Sabbath day I worked for a radio station where I made promotional appearances on the weekend and in the evenings. Because our schedule of events was always different we signed up for what we could cover each week. So I stopped signing up for Saturday events but I made up for it by working more at other times. Sunday I was there. Friday morning, Wednesday night? Yep, any time that was not the Sabbath I would do. Had I just crossed Saturday events off the calendar I wouldn't have fulfilled the requirements of my job; working above and beyond the minimum for the rest of the week made it possible to get that day off though. And by making myself available so much the rest of the week I stayed on my boss' good side which didn't hurt either.
Similarly, a friend was able to get out of working at a grocery store from Friday night - Saturday night (notoriously busy times for retailers), by agreeing to work the hard-to-fill overnight shift Saturday night/Sunday morning. He had never worked thirds before, and didn't really fancy the idea of it it but it was worth it to him to have the Sabbath off.
-Find someone to switch shifts with.
Ask around to see if someone would be willing to trade shifts with you. Someone else might actually prefer the hours you are trying to give up, but you probably won't know unless you ask. You can sweeten the pot by offering to work on Christmas, Easter, etc. - covering those can help you to get off for the Biblical holidays. Be sure to clear any shift trades with your boss if necessary.
-The legal stuff.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act is a federal law that prohibits employers from discriminating based on religion (as well as sex, race, color, and national origin), so it is a crime for your workplace to discriminate against you because you are a Sabbath keeper. This means that federal law requires companies to reasonably accommodate the religious practices of their employees except if doing so would create an "undue hardship" on the employer. "Undue hardship" gets defined as something beyond minimal cost or burden to the employer. Basically, how difficult would it be for your employer to change your schedule? Typically an example is that if you not working on the Sabbath would cause your employer to force someone else to come in or cause them to pay someone overtime to work for you that would be undue hardship, whereas switching shifts with a willing coworker would not. Title VII also says that your employer cannot retaliate against you for exercising your rights to religious accommodation. Obviously the water gets a little murky with the terms reasonable accommodation or undue hardship, but if you feel like you are being discriminated against consider consulting with a lawyer. There are free legal chatlines where you can ask questions, so you can get a better idea of the specifics in your situation.
-Look for other jobs.
What if your employer is not accommodating or the nature of your job demands work on the Sabbath? Rather than throwing your hands up in the air, grab the classified section. See what's out there. Ask around. Send in your resume. Start exploring your options and you may be surprised at what comes up.
-If you're self-employed.
Obviously being self employed gives you the freedom to set your own schedule but facing a drop in business can be daunting. Be encouraged by many stories from self-employed hairstylists, photographers, etc. who have stopped working on Saturdays and have actually seen an increase in business. This might require some changes, like focusing more on family portraits and less on weddings for photographers, for example. But it is most certainly an option for entrepreneurs! As with being a great employee, being excellent at what you do and providing great customer service means customers and clients will work with your schedule.
-What about emergency workers?
In our society there are many jobs that require someone to be there 24/7. I get that. I'm glad that healthcare and help from the police is always available. Caregivers for the elderly or disabled are needed every day of the week. There is also the occasional need for things like snow clearing services, radio and news workers (during natural disasters or storm warnings, for example), and people on call to fix power and phone lines. Does that mean people in these fields have a free pass from observing the Sabbath?
If you're in a field like this, definitely pray about what YHWH wants you to do. While emergencies come up, I don't think this means YHWH wants someone regularly missing out on his set apart day. There is a big difference between a doctor getting called in for life-saving emergency surgery or to help a woman in labor, versus scheduling a routine appointment on Shabbat. I would add that right now there are plenty of people who don't honor the Sabbath day, so it's not like people aren't available to cover your hours. I believe that as we see a shift towards more and more people honoring Shabbat there will be less of a need for many of these services. For example, if sporting events aren't on the Sabbath and factories and job sites are closed, there will be fewer injuries and hence less need for medical services.
As the priests rotated duties in the Temple, I think rotation and taking turns is absolutely essential for jobs like this. For jobs that require round the clock services or someone on call, see about rotating and taking turns so that everyone is able to honor at least some Shabbats.
-If you're interviewing for a job.
Be up front about what schedule would work for you. Don't tell a company that your availability is completely open and then expect them to accommodate you later. We have found that clarifying that you don't mind working overtime or inconvenient shifts, just not the Sabbath for religious reasons, is a good way to clarify your expectations to a would be employer.
-Get creative.
Is a job that pays less offering weekends off? Maybe downsizing your home or vehicles would make a pay decrease a feasible option. Could you start a side hustle to make up for income lost from Saturday overtime? Could one spouse pick up another job so they can afford for the other to have the Sabbath off? Is going into business for yourself a possibility?

Some Great Thing and Health
"If the prophet had told you to do some great
thing, would you not have done it?" -2 Kings 5:13
This is from the story of Naaman seeking healing
for leprosy. From a servant, he had heard that there was a prophet in another
land who could possibly heal him. If you've gathered that Naaman must have been
pretty desperate to travel so far based on a suggestion from someone so low in
rank, you're right. Leprosy is a disease that can be so contagious that you can
no longer live with your family. If you were dealing with something that nearly
cuts you off from your community, you would try about anything to cure
yourself, right? Imagine the expensive doctor consultations and bizarre
therapies sufferers like Naaman must have undergone in an attempt to regain
their lives. It seems too familiar.
As I'm sure the rest of you do, I know way too
many people who have been given a life changing diagnosis. I think of my
friend's mom who died of cancer before seeing her daughters get married or
meeting her grandchildren. I think of a friend my age who is preparing for a
double mastectomy. I think of my grandmother who passed away after multiple
rounds of chemotherapy. I think of community members still working to pay off
the massive debts accumulated for treatment, long after their loved one is
gone.
In my community, cancer diagnoses are met with
heroic resolve. Families put on a brave face, and seek out the most aggressive
treatment for their loved one while hoping for the best. Top oncologists and
clinics are sought out and no expense (stacking up well over the six figure
mark) is spared. Communities rally with meal deliveries and prayer meetings and
fundraisers. In high school the entire basketball team and most of the boys in
school shaved their heads in support of a classmate who was losing his beloved
long hair to chemotherapy. I just watched a video of a college student who dropped out of school to help a leukemia-diagnosed friend fulfill his bucket
list. Those diagnosed with cancer are willing to undergo horrendous
chemotherapy and a slew of nasty side effects in hopes of clinging to life. We
are willing to do the big things.
And that's basically where Naaman was. Something
difficult, sure. Something impressive sounding, absolutely. Remove body parts,
endure radiation, yes. Do something so small it seems to lack significance? Not
so much.
In the past few months I have been able to watch
the documentary series The Truth About
Cancer and that's been incredibly eye opening. The premise of the series is
that cancer is a curable with a variety of nontoxic treatments found all over
the world. There are nine episodes and you hear from dozens of people who were
given scary diagnoses and conquered cancer. And what was surprising to me is
how simple some of these things are.

"heroic" to be effective. This idea says, essentially, that an
effective detox can only be achieved through tremendous suffering and pain."

Who hasn't felt this way before? I've heard from
many friends who gave up on their health goals because, "it wasn't worth
it." Isn't this the idea that leads us to believe that a scary disease
must be met with a state-of-the-art, high-risk, big deal plan for treatment? It seems
like this was Naaman's belief too. After dealing with the physical pain and
social stigma of leprosy for who knows how long, Elisha told him that all he
needed to do was wash in the Jordan River seven times for restoration. And what was his response to the news of how to get his life and health back? Naaman
was angry. He expected something bigger.
"I thought surely that he would come out to
me and stand before me and call upon the name of YHWH Elohim, and he would wave
his hands and cure the leprosy." -2 Kings 5:11
Naaman was offended with how simple the path to
healing was. Imagine him saying, What
does bathing have to do with anything? That's never helped me before or The water quality is higher at my home so I
would have seen a difference there if that was going to work or Does he seriously think I haven't tried
bathing? And honestly, that completely echoes with what I hear from others,
not only about cancer treatment but healthy living in general. Small changes don't lead to big differences.
Simple things don't work.
But a little thing worked for Naaman.
"So he went and washed himself seven times in
the Jordan, according to the word of the prophet, and his flesh was restored
and became like the skin of a child; and he became clean." -2 Kings 5:14
Are you willing to do a small thing for the sake
of your health? Whether you are facing a life-threatening illness, dealing with
allergies, feeling sluggish and tired, or simply want to be around as long as
possible for your family, there are straightforward steps you can take to
better your health that are truly doable. If you believe your body is a temple
for the Holy Spirit then you should believe that it's worth it to invest time,
finances, and effort into caring for it. The following are simple things that
anyone can do, you don't need to be an expert, a millionaire, or a fitness
fiend to incorporate these steps into your life. I am not a doctor so of course
seek specific advice for you and your family from a qualified holistic professional.
Simple changes for a healthier lifestyle:
Drinking more water. Your body needs to be well hydrated to eliminate water-soluble toxins. Therefore, a simple (and free) way to support your body's detoxification abilities is to drink plenty of water. If you replace pop or sugary processed drinks with water, all the better.
Going for walks. Exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle, we've all heard this before, but you don't have to be a P90Xer or bodybuilder to be active. Seriously, if a hardcore workout regimen is intimidating just start with walking. In addition to the physical benefits of activity, exercise is a great way to manage stress. So walk around the block after dinner, catch up with a friend via a walk instead of a coffee shop, and take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Letting fresh air in the house. It's -3° outside as I write this so I get that there are days when you don't want to open up the windows, but unfortunately homes can be filled with with pollutants from building materials, carpet, and furniture; not to mention toxic air fresheners, carpet cleaners, fumes from the garage, etc. Even in winter I open my windows for a few minutes a week to help air these out. In the summer I try to have them open as much as possible but I keep them shut on days nearby farmers are spraying fields.
Taking time to rest. I can't speak enough what a difference making it a point to rest on the Sabbath day has made in my emotional health and well being and I feel like I physically have more energy! Many others have told me the same thing. Make sure you are leaving adequate amounts of blank spaces in your calendar so that you have plenty of time for sleep and restoration.

Earthing. This is really just being barefoot while touching the ground. Since the earth carries a negative charge it works as a powerful antioxidant to our bodies. Earthing or grounding has been shown to relieve pain, reduce stress, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, speed wound healing, and more. You can ground by walking through your yard barefoot, laying on the beach, or kicking off your shoes when you sit at a picnic table or bench.

Cleaning out your cleaning supplies. Do you want to be "cleaning" your home with things that require warning labels? The internet is filled with recipes for homemade cleaners using common and safe household ingredients like vinegar and baking soda. Dr. Bronner's soaps are a good alternative to most and can be found at major retailers.
Switching deodorant with a non toxic one. Studies have shown that aluminum from antiperspirants can get lodged in breast tissue. Studies also show that aluminum can cause cancer. Unfortunately, many popular antiperspirants and deodorants contain aluminum, among many other substances of questionable safety. Health stores have various replacements from sticks to pastes to sprays. I use a spray that works better than the conventional deodorant I was using before, and it sells for the same price.

Consuming probiotics. Most of us were not taught that health issues like chronic fatigue, thyroid imbalances, joint pain, and even autism originate in the gut. A healthy gut is critical to having a healthy immune system to fight off sickness and infection. Benefits of probiotics include everything from help with battling cancer, to fewer colds, to clearing acne, to reducing depression, to preventing cavities! Increasing your probiotic consumption can be done inexpensively by fermenting some veggies yourself, or conveniently by taking a probiotic capsule.
Filtering your water. This goes for drinking water and your shower. It's crazy what sorts of heavy metals can be found in public drinking water and the crisis in Flint, Michigan a few years ago showed us that. Installing a filter on your shower or sink is a one time project that can greatly cut down on the load of toxins in your home.

This could mean rolling on oil when you have a headache, replacing a toxic air freshener with an oil spray, diffusing oil to lift your mood, or adding a few drops to up the potency of your homemade cleaners. For years, I dealt with multiple sinus infections and tried all sorts of things to get them under control with little success. The first time I used an essential oil blend for sinuses I felt 60% better within a minute! While there are some very expensive essential oils, many are very affordable. Inexpensive oils to start with include, clove, grapefruit, cedar wood, lemon, tangerine, and rosemary.

Increase your consumption of B17. One theory on why cancer rates have risen so much in the past 100 years is that we have greatly decreased our consumption of B17. Before hybridization and genetic engineering most grains contained large amounts of the vitamin. Good sources of B17 include buckwheat, millet, lentils, alfalfa, sorghum, peas, berries, and apricot and apple seeds.
Replace plastic storage containers with glass ones. If you've ever seen a plastic container that has picked up some red or orange coloring, you're seeing the food get into the plastic. That means that plastic is also getting into your food. Pyrex and mason jars are affordable ways to switch to a better option.
Swapping out regular candles with beeswax. So those scented candles at the stores contain tons of iffy stuff. Rather than burning one of these and filling your home with the chemicals, light up a candle made from beeswax. By releasing negative ions into the air, beeswax candles reduce indoor pollution and allergens. Burning these can be especially helpful for people with asthma or allergies.
Start dry brushing. This is believed to stimulate your lymphatic system, which is responsible for the elimination of cellular waste. Lymphatic congestion is a major factor leading to inflammation and disease, and taking a few moments a day to stimulate can help your system to function better. Dry brushing also exfoliates your skin, improves digestive function, and increases circulation.
Reheat food in the oven instead of the microwave. Microwaving is known to have some pretty powerful effects on what we eat, greatly diminishing the nutrition of our meals. Consider eating leftovers at room temperature (just take them out of the fridge or your lunch bag an hour or so before you plan to eat), or heating them up on the stove or in the oven. I have found that most meal portions heat up within about five minutes in my oven. Replacing your microwave with a toaster oven would be a convenient option. If you opt to microwave food, don't do so in plastic. A better choice would be in a glass container or ceramic plate.
Take your shoes off at home. Slip off your shoes when you walk in the door as a way to keep germs on your footwear and off your flooring. Particularly if you have small children, you don't want the sludge and grime of what you may have walked in on your carpet. Mop wood and tile floors regularly.
Change out of sweaty clothing. Your body uses sweat to eliminate toxins through your skin. These toxins are absorbed by your clothing when it gets wet from sweat. Make it a point to change after a workout or manual labor and then wash those clothes so you don't give your skin a chance to reabsorb the toxins.

Stop using plastic water bottles. Bottled water is not necessarily any better than tap water, plus the plastic is known to be able to leach into the water, more so when it's heated. Glass or stainless steel is a better choice, plus you'll be cutting back on trash. My transportation for beverages on the go is a large mason jar, which fits in most car cup holders.
Swap traditional laundry detergent with a natural one. You know how it can be hard to breathe in the detergent aisle at the store? Do you really want that lingering on you and in your home 24/7? Encouragement for the New Shabbat Keeper
Learning to set apart the Sabbath day can feel a little daunting. Forming new habits and routines is challenging in any circumstance and it is very common for those new to honoring Shabbat to feel completely overwhelmed by it. Going against society or how we were raised is not easy. I've heard from a few of you recently who truly desire to honor our Creator by resting on the seventh day as he did and are finding this transition time difficult. I've been there too, many of us have. On the Shabbat survey I asked what advice you would give to someone who is new at observing the Sabbath, so that's what we are talking about today, because you aren't alone in this.

20 Tips to Simplify Shabbat Prep
When I first started keeping Shabbat Fridays were a bit overwhelming. The afternoons were a flurry of getting things cleaned, and cooking up a huge amount of food, and, oh no, I need to run to the store. That was really frustrating to me, especially since I was used to Fridays being the happy weekend kick off of relaxation and free time. It felt a little backwards when it became my busiest day of the week. And that's because it takes practice to learn to rest well. If you're not used to preparing ahead of time for a day of no work, that honestly is a bit tricky until you're good at it. But things will get better!
If you're in the stage where preparing for Shabbat is frustrating and overwhelming -- keep practicing! You will get there. With each week that goes by, preparing for the Sabbath gets easier. It's natural now to look ahead and anticipate what our needs will be on Shabbat, and planning for those needs is no longer the chore that it was. Here are a few tips that I've learned to have a less hectic day on Friday and more peace on Shabbat.
20 Tips for Simpler Shabbat Preparation
1. Prepare your heart first. Why have you decided to honor the Sabbath day? Did you feel the Holy Spirit leading you? Did you and your spouse decide to be obedient to YHWH's instructions? Have you decided to let go of traditions to try things the Savior's way? It's important to remind yourself of that when the week is hectic and you start to feel overwhelmed.
2. Plan ahead. Almost everyone who participated in our Shabbat Survey mentioned how much easier things are to get done when you get a jump-start Thursday or Wednesday or even before. Having a plan can alleviate the stress of 'it's-Friday-afternoon-and-I'm-not-ready.' Having even just one thing done going into Friday makes things feel much more under control. Maybe that's getting groceries on Monday, jotting down a to do list, or filling up on gas after work on Thursday.
3. Make note of anything that needs done before Shabbat. If you are a list writer, jot down what for sure needs done ahead of time. Not just meal prep for the Sabbath, also consider upcoming bills that need paid or library books to be returned. Are you low on diapers or medication? Will you need to get gas so you can make it to congregation? Having it written down means we are more likely to remember it.
4. Recognize that things don't need to be elaborate. YHWH does not require us to have spotless homes, four course dinners, or candles lit to welcome Shabbat, so feel free to simplify! If there is one specific thing that helps you to rest well, focus on that and let go of the others.
5. Have a go to Shabbat meal on hand. Despite our best plans and intentions there are going to be times that things get away from us. Having non-perishables or slow to perish items on hand to serve keeps us from violating Shabbat when that happens. Here are some ideas for stocking your pantry for Shabbat prep.
6. Learn to rest when everything isn't perfect. We are not asked to have everything in order or all our to-do list items checked off before Shabbat. Make rest the goal, instead of a spotless home or traditional rituals. Simplifying our expectations allows us to enjoy the simple things instead of obsessing over how things could be in a perfect world.
7. Know some quick last minute snacks to prepare. It takes just a minute to blend up some yogurt and fruit and pour it into a popsicle mold for a great snack the next day. The same for kosher gelatin. Most of those recipes are just letting them chill. These recipes are great to turn to when Shabbat is closing in and the fridge is less than filled.
8. Divide tasks among family members. You don't have to do this by yourself. Assign appropriate tasks for each person in your household to have done by the end of the week. Everyone in the family can have different cleanup jobs, dad can be in charge of grilling for dinner or picking up pizza, and a younger child can pick out which Bible story to read on Shabbat.
9. Figure out what works for you. I have seen several lists of how to get ready for Shabbat, and they are mostly things that would not fit in my life at all. Setting the dining room table for Shabbat dinner the Sunday before? Mine gets used for projects all week long, so that's out. Taking Friday afternoon off? Not usually an option. But if that helps you get ready, then go for it! There is not a right or wrong way to prepare for a day off; decide what works in your schedule and go from there.
10. Log off digitally before Shabbat. Signing out of social media lessens distractions on preparation day, making it easier to get the menial tasks out of the way and to spiritually prepare ourselves. Switching your email to 'off' after work on Friday can become a habit that says, "time to get ready for Shabbat."
11. Grill for Friday evening dinner. You've spent the day scrubbing the dishes and cleaning house. What's more frustrating than kicking off Shabbat with a sink load of dirty pots and pans? Grilling part of your meal can cut down on things to clean up afterwards.
12. Use glass, Pyrex type containers. Having my Shabbat foods stored in glass, oven-proof containers makes things easier in a couple of ways. These can double as serving dishes and go into the oven for foods I am reheating. After our meal I can put the lid back on and store it, without any extra cleanup.
13. Have a special Sabbath basket for kids. Fill it with Shabbat appropriate books, games, and movies so that children can learn which activities are appropriate for the set apart day. This can also make the day more restful to you, as bored children can be sent to the basket to find something to do.
14. Surround yourself with reminders. Write in your planner, put a Scripture on the importance of honoring Shabbat on your bathroom mirror, or schedule reminders in your phone. This brings to mind that Shabbat is coming and we are to be ready for it.
15. Have a potluck meal. If you know like-minded believers or are involved in a congregation consider hosting a covered dish meal on Shabbat. It is much easier to prepare one or two things for a group meal than to do each thing yourself.
16. Empty the dishwasher. I like to have my dishwasher emptied going into the set apart day so that dirty dishes can be placed inside the next day. Another idea would be using paper products to cut down on cleanup.
17. Use a slow cooker and consider a second one. It's hard to get much more convenient than coming home from congregation to a hot meal at the ready, where you have nothing to do but dish it up. I've also heard a couple of people say they like having two so they can have a hot breakfast, and lunch, or lunch, and dinner ready to go.
18. Double recipes throughout the week. This is a great way to have food prepared ahead of time without the extra time commitment of setting aside Thursday evening or Friday afternoon. Make an extra large pot of soup on Tuesday or grill extra chicken Thursday to get a jump start on meals for the Sabbath.
19. Have books and study materials on hand. In addition to copies of Scripture, consider expanding your resource library to assist with your studies on Shabbat. A designated shelf of books can be a place to head on the rest day when you are looking for something to do or want to learn more. This is especially important if you don't attend a congregation. It eliminates the what am I going to do tomorrow question.
20. Remember you don't have to get everything done! When Shabbat comes what's done is done and that's enough. Things can wait. It really is okay to rest while the kitchen is messy and the laundry isn't done, in fact YHWH requires us to. Rest now and take care of the what remains later.
