This weeks Torah portion contains a promise for Abraham from YHWH:
"Look up at the sky, and count the stars—if you can count them! Your descendants will be that many." -Beresheet 15:5
Abraham's grandson Jacob had twelve sons:
Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh)
Since Jacob's name was changed to Israel this is where the Twelve Tribes of Israel come from. Israel's tribes include the Levites, Gadites, Simeonites, etc. as well as the Judahites—known as the Jews for short. Under kings Saul, David, and Solomon these tribes were united as the Kingdom of Israel. When Solomon's son Rehoboam took his place as king the northern tribes rebelled and Israel was divided (1 Kings 12). The ten northern tribes were referred to as Israel and Rehoboam ruled over Judah. Later on the northern tribes were taken captive and they assimilated into the nations (2 Kings 17), the ancestors of Israel are in the world today.
Why do I bring this up? Because I don't think what YHWH told Abraham about his descendants being as uncountable as the stars was just poetic imagery.
There are just under fourteen million Jews in the world today. The Holocaust destroyed at least six million, and some say far more. However that number still does not get us to the number of stars in the sky. The Milky Way alone contains an estimated one hundred billion stars.
100,000,000,000 > 14,000,000
We owe the Jewish people tremendously for their work in preserving the Word of YHWH and those that have practiced His instructions should be highly honored. However, the Covenant that YHWH made with Abraham is not exclusive to the Jews, it includes all the tribes of Israel, as well as anyone who chooses to be grafted in. I realize there are more stars than people on the earth today but isn't this an intriguing idea? YHWH promised Abraham uncountable descendants and there are people living today who have no idea where they come from! Since we can't say for certain who all has descended from the Lost Tribes, we can't count Abraham's descendants. They literally fill the whole earth.
